Our struggle for emancipation from the organized mayhem that is capitalism now takes on an additional grim dimension, that of global climate catastrophe. Not only must we overthrow the insanity of rule by and for a few at the expense and even the lives of all the rest of us, but we must also stop their destruction of the most basic conditions needed for life on this planet. It is no longer a matter of “socialism or barbarism,” but of socialism or extinction. The fight of #ExtinctionRebellion is our fight.
While it is necessary to continue organizing and pushing for specific, targeted reforms, it is crucial these always be presented with climate as our framing concern. If we do not save the conditions for life itself, then what of any and all other issues?
It is traditional on this day to extend warm greetings and wishes to working people everywhere–and so we do. In this time, our tender regard and solidarity is suffused with the urgency of what is the final conflict; let us not fail to heed the concluding stanza of The Internationale:
‘Tis the final conflict, let each stand in [her/his] place;
The Internationale will be the human race.
We are all needed in this cataclysmic moment of history; let us not fail to stand in place for those actions that will lead to final victory. Happy May Day!
